Leadership Class Organizes
                     Successful Food Drive

Picture
Leadership promotes "The Bay" Food Bowl from last Week.
In Leadership Class we help make school activities like food drives, spirit week and a lot of other fun things come to life within the school. We learn how to become better leaders and how to help others who may need it.
Our most recent event was participating in the Fish Bowl Food Drive with the other PSD high schools.
Although we have a total of roughly 90 students we were able to bring in 762 items; that’s about 9 items per student. We made it a competition in hopes of getting everyone to participate.

On Monday the 13th we had decided that our goal was going to be 300 items by Wednesday. We quickly decided we had to re-adjust our goal because we had already surpassed it. By the end of Wednesday we had a new goal of 500. Come Friday afternoon we had our final count and the total was roughly 762 items. Our little school was very proud.
Upcoming events include Spirit Week with fun new themes each day.

New Staff Come to Henderson Bay

Danielle
What is your favorite thing about our school?

My favorite thing about the Academy at Henderson Bay is the overall vibe this school has.  I find myself feeling an instant sense of belonging because of the positive and welcoming students and staff.  I love how Henderson is a place that feels like a second home to me.
What are you interested in besides art?

I enjoy traveling whether it’s in a car, on a motorcycle, by boat or plane.  There is something magical about seeing and experiencing new landscapes and cultures.  Another one of my passions is going to musical festivals.  Music is a big part of my life and helps feed my soul.
What made you become an art teacher?

I have a home video taken of me when I was three years old.  My father asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I responded, “An art teacher.”  I enjoyed creating at a very young age.  Both my parents were teachers and they would bring me into their classrooms, school events, etc.  I loved having that experience.  Honestly, I never really wanted to do anything else.
What artists inspire you?

This question always challenges me.  It’s a difficult question to answer because there are too many inspiring artists out there that inspire me for all different reasons.  Each artist has their own story, their own style, their own voice.  I would say in the end, I get most inspired by my students.  They are the artists that I get to see everyday.  I get to witness them at work first hand.  That’s a blessing I get everyday!

Sarah
On September 13, 2021, I conducted an interview with the new math teacher here at Bay Academy. Her name is Sarah. I asked her four questions about her career and how she likes it. It went something like this.

First, I asked her where she worked before Bay Academy.

Sarah said that she had worked at Meadow Day school.

I asked what made her switch to this school.

She stated there is a nice energy here. She feels like it’s more personal and interactive with the students, which she admires.

I then inquired about what she likes about being a teacher in general.

She said that it’s very enjoyable to do, and that it gives her a good feeling to be teaching the next generation.

Finally, I asked her how she likes to teach her students, and how she keeps them interested in her lessons.

Connecting to the first question, she makes it very interactive, the students are always working and discussing with each other. It makes the class much more involved rather than a bunch of students following a teacher all day.

Meet Robin

Robin works with Communities and Schools to connect community resources to students. She has been a part of the Henderson Bay family for about eight years now. She is an amazing resource and an even better school mom.
Robin will be the person you go to for help, whether that’s graduating, food, or even just finding a safe place. She has a pretty awesome job here at Henderson, planning events and hosting some really cool clubs, such as the Interact Club  sponsored by Rotary.
You will also want to go to her if you are needing food backpacks.
Overall Robin is such a great staff  member at Henderson and is looking forward to meeting all of you guys. “I have the best job at Henderson”- Robin.
She even put together a really amazing resource:
youth suicide prevention. She also has  30 new pairs of shoes to pass out, if you are interested and need shoes, go talk to her because she needs to pre-order sizes and she would love to give them to kids who need them!                                            Story by Abi

Meet Danielle.

She is our IEP teacher here at the Henderson Bay Academy. She started working here at Henderson about a year ago. One main reason she chose Henderson Bay was to help students strive and see them succeed and to help.
Danielle loves teaching and expanding the minds of students. Daniel is an amazing woman and will always be someone to talk to or ask for help.
She loves soccer and playing with her kids. She is very resilient and an amazing teacher.                                  Story by Abi

New Computer Lab
Henderson recently received new computers for two computer labs for the 2021-2022 school year. They are Mac computers (that’s a lot of money and very nice!!). Students will be able to upload their work using them. There are at least 15 in the upstairs lab and 15 in the downstairs lab. They come with a small wireless mouse and keyboard so make sure you don’t lose them.  The computers will be running Sketch Up Pro for Architecture Class plus Adobe PhotoShop and Adobe InDesign for Photography and Publishing classes.  Another upgrade coming soon will be a 3D printer.                                                                               Story by Kaylee

Students Working

Julianna, a former student at Henderson Bay Academy says,”Working at 17 can be hard, there are many laws restricting how much you can work. Working while in school is hard, my body feels tired from being in school for six hours then going to work a seven hour shift.

I got the job at Dairy Queen by getting an application from there and applying.  I was called in for an interview and had to answer a few questions. I was hired on the spot and was told to come in for paperwork a few weeks later.”

I think if you find the right job that works for your schedule then you will be fine. Just have the right motivation and a reliable car that you can drive to and from work.

George.......
Gone
to Bridge Academy
but
not forgotten

Meet George!

He’s been with the Henderson family for about 20 years but just recently chose to teach at the Bridge Academy. He decided to work with  Bridge because he believes education should be taught a different way and the bridge program represents that way the most. He loves that the kids have a choice in what they want to learn and do. It’s their education.
George is a very cool and amazing guy inside and outside of school. He loves to ski and mountain bike and most of all he loves to drive his Jeep Wrangler with the top down in Eastern Washington. He is very passionate about life, he has an amazing garden with a lot of fruits and vegetables. He has almost 200 apple trees in his orchard.
I find that absolutely amazing. Overall George is a really cool guy and an even cooler teacher.         Story by Abi

           Behind the Scenes
I had an amazing interview with Erin on September 20, 2021. I had one pretty big question, "What goes on behind the scenes? What do you do to keep these academies running?"

Erin first gave me a run down of the major academies: the Bay, the Bridge and the Global Virtual Academy.  The Bay features what she calls responsive programming whereas the Bridge Academy and the Virtual Academy cater more directly to individual learner’s needs. What she does for these schools is help staff in helping students. Teaching isn’t always easy, so  having some support through the year really counts. In addition, she may change courses or influence changes in the classroom.

Erin also helps support counseling and in general keeps things going smoothly. Erin also approves a lot of things in the school through the career technical budget like furniture, supplies, and electronics. The new Macs we have in John’s room are from her budgeting. It’s a pretty big, important job!

What inspired your Art Piece ?
Seeing a skull cracked gave me the idea to put the scenery as it is, it reminds me of something I used to watch too.
What makes your artwork different from everyone else ?

I guess how/who views it , I hope everyone can understand the feeling it’s supposed to give off. If one sees it another way than others then that makes this piece unique or different.

How Long have you been doing art and what drives you to do art ?

I’ve been drawing since the 6th grade and I was inspired by art I see on the internet. My art style has changed over the years but now I love drawing how I do.
